Bayer's Process for Alumina Production: a Historical Perspective
نویسنده
چکیده
The Bayer Process (for alumina) as we know it today involves two steps: • The pressure leaching of bauxite with NaOH solution to obtain sodium aluminate solution. • The precipitation of pure aluminum hydroxide from this solution by seeding with fine crystals of Al(OH)3 . The leaching step was invented five years after the precipitation step (Table 1), and the precipitation step was an improvement to the Le Chatelier Process (l), namely replacing CO2 by the seed (Fig. I). In 1888 a British Patent entitled "A Process for the Production of Aluminum Hydroxide" was issued Chatelier (I850-I936) is best known for the thermodynamic principle which bears his name. Bayer (2) was born in Bielitz, a few kilometers southwest of Cracow in Silesia, at that time a Province of the Austrian Empire, now in Poland. The map of Europe at that time was quite different from what we know it today. It was the age of empires: the British, French, German, Russian, Ottoman, and Austrian empires. The Austrian Empire was composed of a vast territory encompassing the present day Austria, northern Italy, Bohemia, and Moravia which are parts of present-day Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Transylvania (a part of present-day Romania), Croatia, Dalmatia and Bosnia

Text Screening (Censorship) in Iran: A Historical Perspective
Censorship has a long history in Iran that has interfered with text production, i.e., original writing as well as translation. This phenomenon seems to have marked the borderline between the government and the ‘enlightened’ intellectuals throughout history in Iran. Different governments have delineated ‘redlines’ for authors and translators and dealt with these constructors of culture based on ...

With the goal of demonstrating the advantages of supercomputer simulations for process design and operations, Bayer AG recently teamed up with Cray Research to perform plantwide dynamic simulations of an entire Bayer production facility in Leverkusen. This paper presents project results and benefits from both a computational standpoint and a Bayer company perspective. Regarding computational as...
متن کاملPhase-Transformation of Gamma-Allumina to Alpha-Alumina as an Industrial Catalyst Support
The phase transformation of aluminum hydrates yields various forms of alumina (d, q, K) and eventually alpha-alumina. The decrease in the specific surface area of alumina upon heat treatment is due to changes in crystalline structure and hence a decrease in the porosity of the material, Although the conversion of gamma-alumina to alpha-structure takes place with a lowering in surface area and p...
متن کاملOn the Study of Mechanical Properties of Aluminum/Nano-Alumina Composites Produced via Powder Injection Molding
Powder Injection Molding (PIM) is a precision manufacturing process used for production of advanced composites. Mixing of polymeric binder with metal powders, molding of feedstock, de-binding of brown parts and sintering of green samples are four main steps of this process. In the present study, the compounds containing multi-component binder system and aluminum/ nano-alumina (0-9 wt.%) powders...
